'Beyond the Box' is an animation that explores the importance of creativity in a childs learning journey, encouraging education that happens outside of the 'box' of the current school curriculum. With the introduction of the Ebacc in the UK, a system that excludes the arts, our animation aims to highlight to parents and educators how vital creative subjects are in schools. Inspired by Catherine Thimmerish's Ted Talk 'Creativity in the Classroom', we reached out to her via LinkedIn for permission to adapt her script, which formed the foundation of our storyboard. The animation follows two characters: Boxy representing the constaints of the current education system, and Spikey, symbolising a childs imagination when its free to be creative.

Beyond the Box
BRIEF
In my second year at university, my team and I were tasked with creating a 60-second motion piece in response to a Creative Conscience brief.
We chose education. Our aim was to challenge traditional teaching methods, that suppress individuality and encourage creative thinking.
FINDINGS
Funding cuts in education: 16% drop in funding for the UK art councils between 2017 and 2024. There are now fewer opportunities for students to explore the arts within schools.
The charity Place2Be aims to embed creativity into school curriculums by setting up creative workshops.
OUTCOME
Told from a child's perspective, our motion piece captures the imagination of a child that gets overlooked in traditional classrooms. Through animation and storytelling it emphasises the need for change inside the classroom.
